The Evolving World of Technology in the Workplace

The evolving world of technology in the workplace in the past few decades has caused a dramatic change in the world of business, allowing businesses to expand more rapidly and efficiently.

These technologies have affected most aspects of day-to-day operations for people of all job titles.

Business technology such as video conferencing, social media, wireless printing and office technology has allowed workers to reach others around the globe in seconds with little to no costs and has removed many workplace boundaries that previously limited business expansion.

The need to physically meet with clients and co-workers has dissipated as technologies now allow employees to communicate effectively from home or anywhere else in the world.

With the abundance of innovative technology also comes the rise of remote workers.

Remote Workers

Remote work is a fast-growing trend in the workplace. Studies show that the opportunity to work from home (or remote locations), with flexibility:

  • Increases productivity
  • Increases employee efficiency
  • Decreases turnovers rates
  • Decreases overhead costs, and
  • Reduces carbon footprint

A large part of the community of remote workers consists of contractors. Our fast-paced, on-demand economy is causing independent professionals to use mobile and technology to create work that is needed by businesses around the world.

It is even becoming increasingly common for professionals such as realtors, consultants and marketers with years of experience to work independently.

There are a vast number of reasons why independent work is on the rise; however, there are two things that have fed the trend in a bigger way, lowering the barriers that once made remote working more challenging.

Co-Working Spaces

Co-working spaces are shared offices that have seen a substantial rise and a yearly growth rate of %21.3 a year since their onset nearly 7 years ago.

These spaces offer freelancers an often affordable place to work with support and resources such as meeting rooms, hi-speed internet and private offices that are not always available at home or in a coffee shop.

Productivity Tools and Apps

During COVID-19 close to 70% of full-time workers are working from home.

This is where devices, apps, and other personal technology allow us to communicate with one another from virtually everywhere.

Cloud-based team collaboration and project management tools such as Slack, Evernote and Trello have paved the way for indirect communication, allowing co-workers and teams to collaborate online.

These tools include voice, video, screen sharing and chat rooms that include both private groups and direct messaging.

The majority of them offer searchable content, file sharing and the option to build checklists.

All of the information on these platforms, unless intentionally deleted, is stored in the software and shared with selected team members in a number of different channels.

Although these new technologies offer an array of services and opportunities, they seem to be integrated by increased efficiency and productivity.

Hey, if new technologies weren’t benefitting our workplaces, we wouldn’t be constantly looking for the new and best device.

The Growing Reliance on Mobile

Devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets together with broadband infrastructure and new applications are making remote work much more achievable and productive.

The growing reliance on mobile (although some say distracting) has allowed us to be in constant communication and always ‘on.’

Our mobile devices can store hundreds of applications, productivity tools and much more.

We are now able to share files, sign documents and have conference calls from a park bench.

Steelhead customers are able to print to their office printer from a home office or other remote location.

The evolving world of technology in the workplace has led to a significant shift in the way we operate businesses, hire employees and communicate.

The ability to work flexibly as a remote worker has become increasingly simple as co-working spaces, innovative technologies and productivity tools are on the rise.

The abundance of new technology has paved the way of the future and if properly implemented, improves productivity, project management and communication in all levels of business.
